Calle 13 and other ‘revolucionarios’ to be honored for social media activism
Are you ready for SXSW interactive in Austin?
With the the biggest meeting of entrepreneurs and digital media innovators in the world just around the corner, we wanted to share some big announcements regarding the Revolucionario Awards at the Social Revolución event — an event that Univision News is proud to be a part of.
The six winners representing the Mobilizer, Innovator, and New Americano categories — and special honoree Puerto Rican duo Calle 13 — were selected from among 140 nominations for those who have inspired change using digital platforms.
Calle 13 will receive the “Líderes of the Revolución” award. The Grammy winning-band has partnered with UNICEF to raise awareness of human trafficking and consistently uses their music videos, concerts, and performances to side with social causes such as student movements across the Americas.
Perhaps the most immediate, biggest platform for Calle 13 to promote social change is through the Twitter account of lead singer René Pérez, aka Residente. Through Twitter, the group documents their travels and performances, and have also collected donations for earthquake victims in Chile and denounced violence and corruption in their native Puerto Rico. All of this done in typical Calle 13 fashion — creating controversy and sparking conversation directly with fans and detractors alike.
