Baila! Our favorite new dance tracks (Audio)

I’m always fascinated by how Felix and I fell in love with music so differently, and how that has affected the way we listen. Felix started out as a musician at age 15. He worked through the summer of 1973 to buy his first pair of congas, and it was an instant love affair. I began as a rhythmic gymnast at around 7 years old. I’d dance for up to five hours every day. Weekends, too.

For Felix, it was all about listening to the instrumentation and learning to create those fantastic sound patterns. I, on the other hand, never listened to music with my ears. I listened with my body, and I still do. When I hear a song I love, I imagine dancing. I can’t even count beats without moving my body. It’s only recently that I’ve learnt to enjoy music that isn’t “danceable.”
