Latino gymnast John Orozco heads to London Olympics! (Video)
In a storyline straight from a movie, gymnast John Orozco beat out Danel Leyva, the defending U.S. men’s all-around champion, by just five-hundredths of a point, earning his spot as the U.S. representative at the upcoming London Olympics, reports the Associated Press.
The 19-year-old Boricua athlete from the Bronx was enrolled in free gymnast classes when he was just seven years old, that were held for socioeconomically disadvantaged kids in Manhattan. It’s been an obsession since then. But it hasn’t all been so simple: his mother, Damaris Orozco, has been troubled with health problems in the past months. The most recent was a 10-day stay at a hospital due to a uterine infection that had spread to her stomach. She’s no in recovery, and attended the championships, watching her son earn his title.
