Dem on Dem Primary in CO

Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez's affiliated PAC designed to challenge moderate to conservative Democratic incumbents may have been beaten to the punch.

This Sunday former Colorado House Speaker Crisanta Duran announced that she would be running against incumbent Democratic Congresswoman Diana DeGette in the 2020 primary.

Duran who lead the Colorado State House from 2017 to 2019 released the obligatory campaign announcement video on Oscar Sunday after months of speculation that she would be seeking to replace embattled and unpopular U.S. Senator Cory Gardner. Gardner is seen as one of the most vulnerable Senate Republican who will be on the ballot in 2020.

Running a primary challenge to an incumbent Democrat by a Democrat is a huge task. Democratic Party rules and customs prohibit incumbents from supporting such efforts and the standards are rarely broken. Duran will have to raise the majority of her funds primarily from grassroots supporters. It is yet to be seen if Duran can create an online effort that can produce the amount of money needed to reach enough voters and a message strong enough to convince them that the centrist DeGette needs to be removed.

The former Speaker has reportedly promised concerned insider Democrats that she will not "attack" DeGette which leaves many wondering how she will make her case for the incumbent's removal.

The emergence of Duran is sure to be only the first of a number of Democratic primary challenges as a new generation of political leaders look to make their mark and hope to be able to reestablish the seemingly fading American dream.

Incumbents should take notice: the state of your base is restive.
