A House committee held a hearing Thursday morning on a Republican bill that declares English the official language of the United States, was taken over by Rep. John Conyers, who spoke Spanish in his remarks.

Puerto Rico must adopt English as its main language if it wants to be considered for U.S. statehood, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said Wednesday.

After a 4-1 vote, Frederick County commissioners in Maryland adopted English as its official language last week.

As an American of Puerto Rican Heritage and lifelong Republican Conservative, I do not view the plan proposed by Newt Gingrich as amnesty. Although not perfect, and not enough for many, it is a plan which should be explored as an alternative to the status- quo.

Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich criticized his party for failing to reach out to Latino voters, part of a somewhat contradictory approach to courting Latino voters while he also calls for English to be the official language of the United States and opposes comprehensive immigration reform bills.
